WORKSHOP: for non-autistic partners in neurodiverse relationships
Four-session series with Sarah Swenson and Mona Kay beginning 1/23/2024
A personal invitation
Hello, Everyone!
I am excited to provide the details for the upcoming series of four weekly workshops that Mona Kay and I will be offering beginning on January 23 with subsequent meetings on January 30, February 6, and February 13 from 7:30 to 9:00 pm EST.
This series is designed to address the specific needs and concerns of non-autistic partners in neurodiverse relationships. If your partner is autistic or may be autistic, this workshop is for you. A formal diagnosis is not required. My philosophy in doing this work with couples is that if the lens of neurodiversity helps you understand your relationship, then you are likely to benefit from considering your relationship in that light.
Our goal is to offer sound clinical information as well as skills and strategies to help you understand and navigate your relationship.
You will learn about the following topics and have the opportunity to ask questions during each session:
Week 1:Â Communication Differences
-Why is it so difficult to feel heard?
-Why does it seem you’re speaking two different languages?
-What can help you understand your differences?
-What can you do to improve communication in your relationship?
Week 2:Â Emotional Differences
-Why do you feel invisible and lonely?
-Why is this relationship unlike what you expected it to be?
-What can help you recognize your differences?
-What can you do to acknowledge and understand your partner’s emotions and help your partner acknowledge and understand yours?
Week 3:Â Socializing Differences: Teamwork and Connection
-Why is it so hard to work together?Â
-Why do your social needs and expectations seem so different?
-What can help you understand how this affects your relationship?
-What recognition and accommodations are possible to respect your differences
while also meeting social demands?
Week 4:Â Sex and Physical Intimacy
-Why is this so frequently a challenge for neurodiverse couples?
-What do you do if your have different needs and desires?
-What will help you understand when these differences arise?
-How can the two of you talk about this with compassion and hope?
Because of the intimate nature of these discussions, we are limiting enrollment. Also, for purposes of confidentiality, we will not be recording these sessions.
If you have any questions about this, please let me know or contact Mona.
